A Message from Plumma & Julie:
My wife Julie and I commenced our association with Mongolia in early 2011. It was an adventure that saw us living there for 5 years and growing to love the people and culture. Conditions there were a marked departure from the cosy western standards that we had come to expect from growing up in Oz, although our adequate salary and work conditions meant that we lived very comfortably. The same could not be said for many Mongolians though. It was through the eyes of our friends Julie and Chevy Veloo that we came to see the plight of many displaced families who had, by circumstance beyond their control, been forced into eking out a living scavenging off the Ulaanbaatar garbage dump.

The Veloo Foundation set about “making a difference…one child at a time”. In our time living there we can testify to their noble work and it’s efficacy and have been very pleased to see their goals grow and to be fulfilled in the subsequent years.
We have supported the Veloo Foundation since their inception, so when we heard that they were going to run a Steel Horse Gallop as a fund-raiser in 2024, we jumped at the opportunity. We see this as a great way to continue our association with the Veloos’ and their tireless work, both of which are very close to our heart. |
I had grown up on a farm and have been riding motorbikes for over fifty years. Julie, on the other hand, did not, a fact that did not daunt her in the least. She has been diligently taking lessons to where she can gain her motorcycle licence. She has even bought her own motorcycle, the same as which we will be riding on the Gallop, to ensure her the best chance of success. I’m sure that technically she will be a better rider than me and have less bad habits! We are both very excited to participate, but more so to have the opportunity to raise needed funds to continue the work of the Veloo Foundation. Having seen first-hand the difference being made to the children’s lives, we are very proud to get involved and contribute what we can. As our close friend Chevy once told me “Giving is for the giver” and that will be our reward.
