A Message from Hans & Nelleke:

Our story begins in 1988 when Hans and I emigrated from The Netherland to the prairies of Manitoba Canada.
We came with a new born baby girl and lots of passion to start our own dairy farm. Hence Optimist Holsteins was created. We raised 3 children while steadily growing our farm. After 35 years we are now retired from the dairy industry. Two of our children with their partners have followed into our footsteps and run their own dairy operation. Besides spending time with our grandkids (6) we have more to give. With passion for travel and getting off the beaten path, we came across a volunteer position for Moon’s Gift Gers in Mongolia. It requires from us to live in a ger for couple months and assist with the marketing of these wonderful living quarters. Not sure what we were getting ourselves into we applied. Julie from the Veloo Foundation ( A fellow Canadian ) reached out and here we are! So far it has been an incredible experience. The hospitality of the Mongolian people and their smiles warms our heart. Of course we got to see for ourselves what the Veloo Foundation is all about. We were introduced to the Children of the Peak Sanctuary where 250 children having a warm safe place and three wholesome meals plus play and education. A big improvement from spending most days alone in a ger without proper care or food while parents are scavenging at the rubbish dump.

We also toured the Gandys Community Library, a place that not only serves as a library but also as a community centre.
We saw firsthand the Fran London sewing center project where women who previously scavenged the Ulaanchuluut landfill now are trained and meaningful employed as seamstresses. The profits made by the sewing center goes directly to fund the kindergartens. ( Children of the peak sanctuary) All of these initiatives are setup through the Veloo Foundation. We went to see garbage dump as well and still saw people scavenging, trying to eke out a living in a cold and dangerous place. In effort to raise more funds we committed ourselves to do the Gobi Gallop / Steel horse Gallop. The longest annual charity endurance ride through the Mongolian Steppe. Every dollar donated will go DIRECTLY as in 100%. to Children of the Peak Sanctuary. Let’s fundraise in a BIG way.
