In 2022 Fran McNicol was a member of the Blue Wolf Totem expedition, riding a record breaking 3,600 kilometers across the breadth and width of Mongolia, and raising funds for the disadvantaged Mongolian children who are being helped by Veloo Foundation's Children of the Peak Sanctuary Project.
Now two years later Fran is setting off again to participate in the Gaucho Derby, billed as the world’s toughest adventure horse race. This time it is only 500km, but across some of the wildest terrain Patagonia has to offer, and riders need to be self sufficient for large parts of the route.
Blue Wolf Totem was an exercise in belief and learning what one is capable of- so you could say the kids were instrumental in the choice Fran made to do the Gaucho Derby. How appropriate then that Fran chose The Children of the Peak Sanctuary as her chosen charity for her new adventure

Mongolian Adventure!
My original motivation back in 2022....
My name is Fran and I am a senior colorectal surgeon working in Liverpool in the UK. I have loved horses and riding all my life and a couple of years ago I got to fulfil the dream of a lifetime and ride with the Mongolian herdsman on a scientific expedition to the mountains of Western Mongolia. I completely fell in love with the country and the people and have been scheming to get back there ever since. That trip was a 3 week trip and we hardly covered any distance in terms of seeing the country. So the big attraction of this trip is the sheer audacity and scope of the brief- 3600 miles over 84 days, taking in all the different landscapes, from steppes to desert to mountains and meeting with the different tribes of Mongolia, in one epic journey. We will be travelling over the land exactly as people have roamed this country through history, on horseback, thereby experiencing the cultures and the challenges in a truly authentic way.
And by doing so we will be completing the longest charity ride in history, to raise awareness and funds for one of the most deprived groups of children on the planet; the Mongolian kids who scavenge on the capital's rubbish tip to survive.
Please help me raise lots of money to help these deeply disadvantaged children. Helping their poorest and most vulnerable citizens seems an appropriate way to repay the Mongolian people we will meet along the way for their incredible hospitality and generosity in sharing the wonders and secrets of their beautiful country with us.
