A Message from Charlotte:
The Veloo Foundation established and manages the Children of the Peak Sanctuary, kindergartens, currently supporting over 300 children who would otherwise be existing by scavenging over the landfill site at Ulaanbaatar. Their families have migrated to the city from their nomadic life on the steppes, in the hope of finding work, following extremely harsh winters during which their livestock were unable to survive. Without skills, or city resident status, employment is almost impossible to find. The Children of the Peak Sanctuary helps to support the children though education, provision of nutritious food, and employing local residents to oversee the care and well-being of the children.

In June 2023 I plan to travel to Mongolia to take on the Gobi Gallop – a journey of 700 km (435 miles) across Mongolia to be completed on horseback in 10 days. Why? You might well ask! Having ridden to an Eagle Festival in the Altai Mountains in 2015 I had always wanted to return to Mongolia. The Gobi Gallop seemed to be the ideal reason to return, combining a challenging ride with an opportunity to gather support for a very worthwhile project. I am covering all of the expenses for the trip myself. Therefore, all of the money donated and raised will go directly to support the work of the Veloo Foundation in Mongolia, a charity registered in Canada.

In addition, a summer camp is provided for over 300 children from impoverished areas of the city. A sewing centre now employs some women who have been trained as seamstresses by the Foundation. The Veloo Foundation helps to alleviate poverty and provides education and much needed support. The route for the 2023 ride has not yet been established but will involve long hours on horseback covering varied and challenging terrain. Although I have been fortunate enough to ride over the Andes from Argentina into Chile, cross the Maasai Mara in Kenya, travel on horseback through Rajasthan and Israel, I expect this will be the toughest ride yet. As a breeder of Irish Draught horses, it is always fascinating to see other breeds of horses and experience cultures which exist in different parts of the world. The Gobi Gallop ride is the longest annual charity horseride on the planet.
