My Volunteer Story!
Hello, global citizens! My name is Enkh-Ariun Munkhgerel and I am 19 years old. I study Social Work at Loyola University Chicago. Ever since I decided to pursue this major at a young age, volunteerism, community service projects, and social services have become the hallmark of my dreams and goals. Most fortunately, my high school (American School of Ulaanbaatar) provided me with numerous volunteer opportunities to participate in. Consequently, I discovered Veloo in my freshman year through National Honor Society and its annual Lunar Year Food Drive. Veloo Foundation had established a strong bond with my school, thus allowing current students and alumni to volunteer and engage with their wonderful staff and children. I knew Ms. Julie since middle school whenever she visited our school to talk about her work. I was inspired every time thinking about all the small steps she took in order to make big changes in the lives of those less fortunate. Therefore, I have been volunteering at Veloo for a long time, because the experience is worth every journey.
My fondest memory at Veloo would have to be my latest outing to the Soaring Crane summer camp. This was a service project in cooperation with the Netherland’s Global Exploration Program. I had so much fun engaging with aspiring young adults who not only wish, but also work towards making the world a better place. I have absolutely no doubt that the Veloo Foundation and everyone who gets involved will achieve great things in this world, and we start by helping the people in it. It was countless moments of pride and happiness to see people of all cultures, backgrounds, and ages working together in harmony to step up and volunteer. Moreover, I also loved being in the outdoors, surrounded by vast hills and livestock. Apart from all the service work such as improving the camp for future visitors, the interaction and teamwork between foreign guests and Mongolians only grew.
