I am deeply honoured and grateful to have been given a cancellation spot on the 2019 Gobi Gallop. Although this gives me just 5 months to prepare, I cannot stop smiling!
Huge thanks to my wonderful friends and supporters, Wolf, Wendy, Simone, Hayley, Toni, Anthony, Piers
My main motivation for doing this ride is to help the unfortunate children whose images haunt me… rummaging through garbage in extreme cold, fighting to survive on a daily basis, having a future filled only with dread... We truly cannot understand this from our privileged Western perspective and easy lives. I have always looked to support more personal charities, and having Julie Veloo herself ride with us and getting to meet the children of Ulaanbaatar whom we help is what a real charity project is all about. Forming real lasting bonds and changing lives for all involved. Unlike many charities, 100% of what we raise will go directly to the Children of the Peak Sanctuary Kindergarten.
Every friend will know that I have ridden all of my life, owned several horses and been a certified dressage trainer since 2011 having qualified in Germany. Some longer standing friends will remember me prior to this time owning a golden Akhal Teke and riding out for hours and hours alone as a teenager, before mobile phones and “health and safety”, galloping through fields and woodland and every grass verge going. For many years I have yearned for this former freedom and have vaguely researched riding trips to remote areas, especially Mongolia. Much of the country unspoiled by human greed, looking like it is from another planet. The vastness of the landscape and solitude just amazes me, and ties in very much with the mediation practices that I do, relating directly to the infinite space of the mind. To explore the steppe on horseback as real Mongolian nomads have done for thousands of years, experiencing both the pleasures and the hardships, is a real privilege and practice in itself. My friends will agree, this is SO me, and not doing an organised tourist ride or a “normal” trip!
I have participated in various charity/volunteering events over the years in Costa Rica, Kenya and Nepal several times. After recently having had an incident off a rearing horse in November 2018 resulting in concussion, I decided it was time again to use the short span of this brief human existence as usefully as possible. I will put my dressage boots to one side for now, and instead I really hope to raise a considerable amount to help these children, plus inspire others that an altruistic life is a happy life.
I am both thrilled and terrified at the prospect of doing this ride. Going from the dressage arena to riding 10 hours a day on semi wild ponies over 700km of difficult terrain is something one cannot completely prepare for here in Greater London. But this self inflicted challenge and suffering I’m sure will lead me to a deeper level of connection with both myself and with those much less fortunate, resulting in experiences that will last a life time and surely reinforce my personal spiritual practice. I cannot wait to meet the other members of the team, both two and four legged.
I have a formal training programme of riding, running, yoga and meditation leading up to the event. But I cannot do this on my own... I REALLY need your help with fundraising and support to get me through this tough mission! Please donate generously to help secure these children a brighter future.
My fundraising goal this year is $3,500.00 USD through donations and fundraising events. Please join "TeamAnita" and help me make a difference for the children and families living in abject poverty and scavenging in the garbage to survive. NOTE - Qualified US and Canadian Donors will receive a tax receipt for their donation and 100% of all donations in support of the Gobi Gallop go directly to help the children!!
